About ISB

Since its founding in 1973, the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) has grown to a global membership of over 1,000 professionals. The Society exists to promote the study of biomechanics across a broad range of disciplines, encouraging international collaboration, the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and the development of national biomechanics communities.

Biomechanics plays a vital role in understanding biological systems at every scale — from molecular mechanics to human movement, from cellular biology to population-level health. Reflecting this diversity, ISB members come from fields including anatomy, physiology, engineering, orthopaedics, rehabilitation medicine, computer science, sports science, ergonomics, electrophysiological kinesiology, AI, robotics, and more.

The Society facilitates affiliate memberships with national biomechanics organizations and supports global initiatives that promote biomechanical research, education, and application. Core activities include:

  • Organising a biennial international congress
  • Publishing the ISBNow quarterly newsletter
  • Supporting regional and thematic scientific meetings
  • Sponsoring early-career initiatives and international collaboration

The biennial ISB Congress is the Society’s flagship event — a vibrant global meeting place for researchers, students, clinicians, and innovators. Each edition provides an unmatched opportunity for attendees to connect across disciplines, share emerging science, and build lasting professional relationships.

To promote international inclusion, each congress is hosted in a different region. Recent editions have been held in America, Japan, Sweden and Canada.

We are now delighted to welcome you to Sydney, Australia for ISB 2027 — a return to the Asia-Pacific region, where the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence will be celebrated on a global stage.
